Chevron teams up with Open Goal Project and Fresno FC to offer local youth soccer training and STEM learning
Fresno, Calif., August 31, 2018 – Chevron U.S.A. Inc., Open Goal Project and Fresno FC today launched the Chevron Soccer Academy – a groundbreaking partnership designed to bring soccer training and STEM learning to local youth in Fresno.
Approximately 200 boys and girls ages 9-18 from Coalinga-Huron Unified, Firebaugh and Mendota will receive firsthand soccer training from professional coaches and get an up-close look at what it takes to play soccer at a high level with Fresno FC and Fresno State players. The program will also inspire science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning through the science of soccer, as part of Chevron’s commitment to equipping youth with the critical skills they will need to succeed in jobs of the future.
The program is designed to help ensure all children have access to youth soccer at a time when income disparity can limit youth from competing in the sport they love.
“Chevron is thrilled to partner with Open Goal Project and Fresno FC” said Megan Lopez, policy, government and public affairs representative for Chevron. “Students will not only learn technical aspects of soccer, but the science behind it as well, which we believe is a motivator to pursuing a career in STEM.”
“We are proud to bring this partnership to life in the form of free soccer programming for Fresno area families” said Amir Lowery, a former Major League Soccer player and the executive director of Open Goal Project, a nonprofit designed to create opportunities for players from low- income families to access high-level soccer opportunities. “Our goal is to use soccer as a vehicle to for youth development, cultural experiences, and opportunities for higher
education. We believe that the Chevron Soccer Academy does exactly that, and we couldn't be happier to work with such influential community partners like Fresno FC and Chevron.”
Fresno FC is part of the United Soccer League. Their inaugural season launched in March 2018.
“This is an incredible opportunity to grow youth soccer in Fresno and inspire kids to pursue their dream on and off the field” said Chris Wilson, Fresno FC vice president of operations. “Participants will have the opportunity to work directly with the Fresno FC players and hear their journey to becoming a professional soccer player.”
The boys clinic will take place on September 22 at Chukchansi Park and the girls clinic will take place on September 23 at Fresno State with a focus on standard game play and strategy. The Chevron Soccer Academy will also host a boys and girls tournament on October 6, which is also open to players ages 9-18. About Open Goal Project
Founded in 2015 in Washington, D.C., Open Goal Project focuses on using soccer as a vehicle to provide opportunities for growth, on and off the field, for talented youth players from low-income families. In the forms of direct financial support, logistical coordination, intense mentorship, and free high-level programming, Open Goal Project strives to eliminate the obstacles and barriers to entry that keep many youth players on the sidelines.
The high costs associated with pay-to-play youth soccer include registration fees, uniforms, transportation, lodging, meals, and supplemental training. Empowering talented youth players and their families with resources to navigate the pay-to-play system allows them the opportunity to reach their full potential as soccer players and young adults. Open Goal Project takes pride in leveling the US youth soccer playing field by bridging the gap and making soccer more accessible for young players who love soccer, while leveraging the game for the growth, development, and greater life experiences for the young men and women it serves.
