when we launched open goal project in 2015, we were working to register and cover costs of travel soccer for three talented young players from low-income families. since that time, we've expanded our reach significantly, and to date we have successfully registered and have helped cover travel costs for more than a dozen talented youth soccer players in DC who deserve opportunities.
some of the biggest challenges the players we support face when it comes to playing on a travel team include:
- lack of resources (transportation to and from practices and games, financial support, etc.)
- lack of information (low-income families often struggle to gain access and knowledge regarding greater youth soccer opportunities)
- language barrier (many immigrant families find it difficult to navigate the youth soccer landscape if they are not proficient in english)
as resources permit, we hope to continue expanding the number of players we register on travel teams throughout the dc area.
