Local Youth Score Big with Chevron Soccer Academy

Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (Chevron), Open Goal Project and Los Angeles Football Club will host the Chevron Soccer Academy in Bakersfield – a partnership designed to integrate soccer and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning. Through this collaboration, local youth will see visible pathways to success on and off the field.

Approximately 450 boys and girls ages 9-18 from Bakersfield and surrounding areas (Arvin, Lost Hills, and Shafter) will receive firsthand soccer training from professional coaches and get an up-close look at what it takes to play soccer at a high level. The Academy will also feature a special appearance on June 1 by Brandi Chastain, two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion, two-time Olympic gold-medalist, coach and sports broadcaster. And players will be inspired by STEM learning through the science of soccer, as part of Chevron’s commitment to equipping youth with the critical skills they will need to succeed in jobs of the future.

The program is designed to help ensure all children have access to youth soccer at a time when income disparity can limit youth from competing in the sport they love.

“Chevron is thrilled to partner with Open Goal Project for the Chevron Soccer Academy” said Patty Canessa, Public Affairs Manager for Chevron in Bakersfield. “Students will not only learn technical aspects of soccer, but the science behind it as well, which we believe is a motivator to pursuing a career in STEM.”

“We’re so excited to bring the Chevron Soccer Academy presented by Open Goal Project to the Bakersfield community. From our diverse collection of coaches with playing experiences at MLS, NWSL, and International levels to the soccer and STEM integration, we believe the program will provide the boys and girls of Bakersfield with unique new perspectives and inspire them to dream bigger, on and off the field,” said Amir Lowery, a former Major League Soccer player and the executive director of Open Goal Project, a nonprofit designed to create opportunities for players from low-income families to access high-level soccer. “Our goal is to use soccer as a vehicle for youth development, cultural experiences, and opportunities for higher education. We believe that the Chevron Soccer Academy does exactly that, and we couldn't be happier to work with such influential community partners like Chevron and LAFC.”

Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) is a Major League Soccer team. Their inaugural season was March 2018. The girls’ and boys’ clinics will take place on June 1, and the coed tournament will take place on June 2. All events will take place at CSU Bakersfield with a focus on standard game play and strategy. Participants will also have an opportunity to hear players discuss their respective journeys to professional soccer.
