Community. Family. Love.
Thank You For Your Interest in Volunteering With Us!
MLS GO powered by DCFC is Open Goal Project’s free recreational and developmental soccer program for children ages 5–12. Players train twice each week and compete in Saturday morning games at Edgewood Recreation Center.
The program creates a welcoming environment where young players can build their soccer skills, confidence, teamwork, and love for the game—regardless of their family’s ability to pay. Volunteers help us provide student-athletes with encouragement, individual attention, and a positive experience throughout the season. We are looking for dependable, enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy working with children and believe every young person should have the opportunity to play.

Ways To Get Involved
Whether you’re looking to volunteer individually, engage your company or community group, or complete service hours as a high school or college student, there’s a way for you to get involved.
Select the option below that best describes you to learn more about the opportunity, commitment, and next steps.
-
Become a consistent member of the MLS GO community by volunteering throughout an entire season. Individual volunteers work alongside Open Goal Project coaches to support practices, games, and the overall player experience.
A season lasts approximately 10 weeks. Practices are held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30–6:00 p.m., with games on Saturdays from 8:00–9:30 a.m. at Edgewood Recreation Center.
Consistent volunteers are encouraged to attend at least one session each week for the duration of the season. Our fall season typically begins in September, and our spring season typically begins in March.
-
Bring your company, soccer team, church, alumni group, or other community organization to volunteer together!
Groups can join us for a designated Saturday during our annual Give & GO Month. Volunteers can assist with games, encourage players, help with field operations, and spend time building meaningful connections with our young people and coaches.
Groups are also invited to make the morning special by providing breakfast, coffee, donuts, snacks, or another contribution for participating players, families, and coaches.
Give & GO Month dates:
Saturday, November 7
Saturday, November 14
Saturday, November 21
-
High school and college students can volunteer with MLS GO to complete service hours, gain experience working with children, and become more involved in the DC community.
Students may serve consistently throughout the season or participate during a designated Give & GO Month event. Open Goal Project can verify completed service hours when attendance and responsibilities are documented in advance.
Students under age 18 will be assigned age-appropriate responsibilities and will always serve under the supervision of Open Goal Project staff. Volunteers age 18 or older may be required to complete the adult volunteer clearance process before participating.

VOLUNTEER ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Depending on the needs of the program and your interests, volunteers may assist with:
-
Help coaches prepare the playing area by moving goals, placing cones, organizing equipment, filling water coolers, and returning materials after each session.
-
Assist Open Goal Project coaches with demonstrations, small-group activities, and age-appropriate soccer exercises. Volunteers follow the direction of the lead coach and do not independently supervise players unless specifically authorized.
-
Offer positive feedback, celebrate effort, help children stay engaged, and model good sportsmanship. The most important qualification is a willingness to help every player feel welcomed and supported.
-
Help teams get organized, distribute pinnies, retrieve soccer balls, track substitutions, direct families, support check-in, and assist staff with other game-day needs.
-
Welcome families, answer basic logistical questions, help new participants find their teams, and direct any program-specific questions or concerns to Open Goal Project staff.
-
During Give & GO Month and other community events, volunteers may help distribute food, organize activities, take photos when authorized, welcome guests, and keep event areas clean and organized.

Volunteer activities may include setting up fields, assisting with game-day operations, encouraging players, welcoming families, distributing snacks, and helping create a fun and memorable environment.

Dates are placeholders and will be confirmed before registration opens.
